Exploration campaign for the localization and excavation of the burial site of King ALARIC I
(Probably buried with objects looted in Rome 410 AD)
From an Archeologist’s point of view:
It is believed that the preservation conditions onsite have favored the conservation of treasures, which provide hope for major archaeological findings.
Besides the study of the remains of the famous defunct personage, the investigation of organic vestiges could provide essential information to retrace the last living hours of the Man who shook the Roman Empire.
Beyond the undisputed value of the treasure, the examination of King Alaric’s funeral furniture would provide a precise image of what was exactly the “Treasure of Rome” that has been so extensively praised by ancient historians.
Objects of high historical and religious value could coexist with everyday objects of the Visigoth King.
Several scientific questions arise, opening a vast research field for multiple disciplines of archeology studying this period.
A closer look of this remains would be as taking a snapshot of a major historical event that could lead to the discovery of the burial site of this key figure in the history of antiquity.
Methodology
- Phase 1 – Detection and location, in 3 chronological phases, of the historical epicenter of the archeological remains on King Alaric’s tomb, near Cosenza, Provincial de Calabria (Italy).
- Phase 2 – Research work, excavations, diversion of the watercourse over 10 meters (civil engineering) and uncovering of the first objects.
- Phase 3 – Detailed excavation of the site by confirmed field archaeologists, update of findings.
- Phase 4 – Exploitation of research, laboratory results, participation to international conferences.
Hypothesis of restitution of the burial of Alaric I (deceased in 410 AD) and it’s hypothetical funeral deposit.
Organization
The Association has been created in a mixed mode, which is awaiting legal validation by the franco-italian authorities.
The headquarters of the association is to be decided between Paris and Rome-Cosenza and will be ratified between July and December 2023.
3 universities of 3 Countries are ex-officio about 100 people work or will work directly on this project, on the site, for 24 to 36 months, including more than 75 scientists.
Depending of the results obtained, other members partners, large global groups and managers are collaborating or will be involved in various forms in this project.
A crowfunding project is being considered on an international scale.
A film project, in several versions, for various audiences, with worldwide distribution, is being studied, retracing the entire history of King Alaric’s Treasure Organization project.
This project will be rich in historical, archaeological, medical (paleo virus) teaching, and will require a total budget estimated at 1,2 million euros of research cost for this campaign, which will be spread over two years and that we estimate 90% of probabilities of success and discoveries, considering the elements and telemetry carried out for 3 years on the zone, in our possession.
